A group of 35 divers from Club de Buceo Melilla, which is part of the volunteer Red de Vigilantes Marinos, have worked over the weekend out of different vessels from Noray port in Melilla.
In this working area, the divers divided themselves into groups to remove marine debris from common sea litter hotspots, both in the Aguadú and Horcas Coloradas areas. After collecting close to a ton and a half of sea litter, they returned to port at around 1 PM to weigh and classify the waste collected. Some noteworthy findings were metal fences, rubber wheels, plastics and glass.
This activity takes place within the framework of the week against sea littering in Melilla (from August 26 to August 30), with special focus on the special conservation area of the Aguadú cliffs.
Mr. Hassan Mohatar Maanan, Councilman for environmental issues with the Autonomous City of Melilla, attended this event, framed within the citizens’ agenda.
The Sacyr Foundation is committed to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG). In this case, with SDG 13, Climate Action, and SDG 14, Life Below Water. Moreover, this is not the first time that we participate in this activity in Melilla, as Valoriza already took part in another occasion that removed 3,500 kg of marine debris from the sea. The fact that the collected amount is smaller this time is due to citizen’s awareness becoming increasingly widespread.
