Last Friday, we had our first weRSoCial of 2024, where six of the volunteers from the Kenya trip detailed their experience.
If you couldn't attend or watch it via streaming, we'll show you the link in this news piece.
Thanks to an agreement between the Sacyr Foundation and the Emalaikat Foundation, eight Sacyr workers were able to accompany Rocío Aguirre and Eleni Tsegaw on the Turkana mission.
The colleagues who went are Raquel Núñez (Corporate); Helena García (Sacyr Engineering and Infrastructure); Lucía Fraga (Corporate); Pilar Cachorro (Valoriza); Álvaro Valvidares (Valoriza); Inés Ramos (Sacyr Concesiones); Marta García (Valoriza); and Esther Moral (Corporate).
They spent two weeks there in a semi-nomadic settlement, assisting with all the tasks that Emalaikat carries out there with the indigenous population.
The group created a schedule with work shifts by teams. Each day they participated in different activities related to healthcare, maintenance and visiting facilities, educational activities, support for the elderly, sports, and leisure in general.
Additionally, they visited stone water dams to ensure access to clean water.
Among the most important tasks they carried out are:
- Healthcare support (nutritional monitoring, delivery of supplements in case of malnutrition, oral vaccination, weighing and measuring babies, HIV and syphilis tests, pregnancy monitoring)
- Facility maintenance (painting schools, touching up signs)
- Educational activities at the Don Bosco library (English classes, science and technology workshops, dance and party classes, bead workshops)
- Nutritional support for the elderly (preparing food bags to be delivered to the elderly monthly)
- Organizing materials and donations from Spain
- Sharing moments with children
"In all the activities, we were always surrounded by children eager to play, learn, and accompany us in every task. This has been the most beautiful and emotional part of volunteering. They accompanied us at every moment," concludes Esther.
The Emalaikat Foundation works in South Sudan, Ethiopia, Kenya, and Malawi. Among its objectives is comprehensive support for people's development, through projects especially related to water. Additionally, they promote projects to improve nutrition, agricultural resources, health, and education.
