The Asociación Española contra la Leucodistrofia (‘Spanish Association against Leukodystrophy’) is a non-profit aimed at the comprehensive attention to leukodystrophies. This disease happens because a series of rare genetic disorders affect the central nervous system, formed by the brain and the spinal cord. In the early stages, it causes motor and visual alternations, and in the later stages, cognitive impairment.
The Sacyr Foundation is going to finance the treatment of 15 children and seven adults. These 22 people, affected by leukodystrophy, will receive speech, physical, hydro and horse therapy attention. This last type of treatment is used to help the patients build muscle mass, as it involves multiple muscle groups, and it contributes to increasing strength, resilience, balance, and coordination, and improving motor dexterity.
