The Sacyr Foundation has signed a collaboration agreement with the NGO UPlanet to carry out humanitarian aid volunteer activities in Mauritania in 2025.
Specifically, the project focuses on increasing the production and enhancing the quality of drinking water for the population of Bir Mogrein, Mauritania, through the installation of a desalination plant, with the planned involvement of volunteers from our company.
The desalination plant will convert brackish water into potable water, significantly increasing the availability of safe water for human consumption, domestic use, and even agricultural purposes.
By providing high-quality drinking water, the project is expected to reduce the incidence of waterborne diseases, such as diarrhea and other gastrointestinal infections.
The desalination plant also represents a step toward environmental sustainability in the region. When properly implemented, desalination technology can provide a continuous water supply without depleting natural water resources. This is crucial in a region where water is a scarce and valuable resource.
Finally, with the collaboration of the Sacyr Foundation, local personnel will be trained in the operation and maintenance of the desalination plant. This initiative will promote knowledge and technical skill transfer, creating both direct and indirect employment opportunities within the community.
NGO Activities
UPlanet is a Spanish NGO working in two social domains: developing awareness and training projects within Europe for young people from other European organizations, funded through the Erasmus+ program, and implementing international cooperation projects in Uganda and Mauritania.
The organization supports other entities by providing funding and project management, mainly focused on infrastructure in sectors such as access to potable water, healthcare, and education.
In Mauritania, UPlanet has been collaborating since 2023 with the local counterpart, Mohamed Salem Association, and the Spanish NGO Human Coop to seek funding for projects aimed at improving access to drinking water, enhancing existing clinic facilities, implementing sustainable agricultural projects, and establishing agreements with local administrations.
