World Down Syndrome Day (WDSD) seeks to raise awareness about Down syndrome as a condition and the people who have it and advocate for their individuality, rights, and independence to make decisions.
People are usually born with 46 chromosomes, but people with Down syndrome have more. It is a disorder caused due to having extra genetic material in chromosome 21, which has variable effects on the person’s intellectual abilities.
The date for WDSD being the 21st day of the 3rd month, was selected to signify the trisomy which causes Down syndrome. The Sacyr Foundation collaborates with several organizations that work for the inclusion of people with Down syndrome. Additionally, today, March 21, our Sacyrian colleagues came to work wearing different socks, to show support and visibilize that there is beauty in difference.
