A total of 14 women, most of whom are breast cancer patients receiving treatment at the Infanta Cristina University Hospital (Parla, Madrid), were able to walk the French Way of the Camino de Santiago thanks to the collaboration of the Sacyr Foundation.
A representative from the Foundation was able to accompany them on the last stage of the journey and witness the spirit of perseverance and resilience of women who, despite having a physical condition affected by multiple cancer treatments, managed to overcome daily walks of nearly 20 kilometers to reach their final destination, Santiago de Compostela, on Friday, September 20.
Alongside them was a team of healthcare professionals (one doctor, one physiotherapist, and three nurses) who were attentive to the patients' needs throughout the journey.
This project, supported by the Foundation, aims to raise awareness about the positive effects of physical activity and a healthy lifestyle on cancer-related conditions.
This adventure has allowed the patients to reinforce their self-esteem through personal achievement, which has been particularly significant in many cases.
The 14 women completed five stages from Sunday, September 15, to Friday, September 20, with accommodations based in Arzúa. They rested in Santiago de Compostela on September 21 and 22.
The Mayor of Parla walked the last stage with them from September 20.
